i fell stupid: how didn't i realized before that handling completion events was not needed? the only trick is to call XSync after drawing! this not only improves smoothness and schedulability issues but also moves the frame dropping to video_out.c were they can be accounted properly. not to mention it makes frontend programming a lot easier.
