Apparently because the compiler was unable to inline a call to get_rl_index somewhere, and an 'extern inline' function does not output the assembler code for such a function. 'static inline' fixes the problem. (Another option to fix this problem is to use 'extern inline' in the header, *and* include a non-inline version of the same function in the library, too.
