VDR uses port 6419 now, vdradmin-am should change it too so it would work out-of-the-box.

That's true for the development version of VDR. In my opinion it's more important that the defaults work out of the box for the stable version which still uses port 2001.

What would be an easy way for package maintainers to make vdradmin-am (latest version) work with vdr (latest version)?
Currently the vdr packages are updated for 11.04 - see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/vdr/+bug/762558

Just ship it with a config file that sets the desired port, or patch it to use the desired port by default.
