Description

The "Enable teletext support" option is confusing. Just like in bug 322, it resulted in wasted time for me, and additionally a bunch of recordings that now have no teletext subtitles recorded.

1) The MANUAL hunk of 0002-Added-setup-option-to-enable-teletext-subtitle-recor.patch adds a "Record Teletext Subtitles" entry, but the name of the option is actually "Enable teletext support". I suppose the MANUAL entry is wrong, because this option does not seem to control just recording of ttxtsubs, but also live display of them.

2) Why does the option exist in the first place? We already have an option for turning off display of ttxtsubs in the ttxtsubs plugin setup. Shouldn't one of these be removed?

3) Why is the default for this option off?

I'd prefer if this option (or the similar one in ttxtsubs setup) would be removed. If it cannot be removed, the issue mentioned in 1) should at least be fixed, and my strong opinion is that the default for this option should be on, not off to prevent more people who upgrade from VDR 1.6.0 to waste time on finding out why their ttxtsubs no longer work, and possibly lose ttxtsubs on a bunch of recordings like I did.

Sorry for waiting so long for an answer!

You're right - the text in the MANUAL is wrong.

The intention for having this option is, that the vanilla VDR does not receive/record teletext-PIDs and I don't want to modify VDR's standard behavior by a patch, without explicitly enabling it in the settings.

But a solution I could think of would be, that this option is automatically enabled, if the ttxtsubs-Plugin is installed.
So if the plugin is installed, you don't have to care about this setting. Without the plugin you must explicitly enable the setting if you want to record the subtitles (e.g. on a head-less VDR server).

What do you think?

Sounds like an improvement over the current situation to me, but personally I'd still prefer just removing the option.
