It would be nice if softhddevice implemented its own lirc handling and the remote was active only when softhddevice was attached.This would make softhddevice/vdr behave better in an enviroment where there are other lirc clients (like xbmc). Currently thing can be done with svdrp remo on|off command in scripts which is messy.

I don't see many advantages adding another lirc client.
You can use the normal event system, which are given to vdr as x11 inputs.
You can use the externalplayer plugin, which handles turning remote on/off for external players.
